It’s time for kids of all ages (from preschool to high school) to get their summer reading on! And, there is no better way than with University Park Public Library’s UP with Reading! Take a Magic Carpet Ride Summer Reading Program, which takes flight on June 6 and soars through July 26.

“Maintaining reading skills throughout the summer is vital to student success.  We are so happy to partner with Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty to encourage summer reading and to make it fun for young readers,” said Sharon Martin, director of the University Park Public Library.

This year, summer reading kicked off with a poster contest that will be used to promote the program. The first place winner is Evan Graeme, a student at St. Mark’s School of Texas.

You can register for Up with Reading by attending the Children’s Fishing Derby at Caruth Park on June 6.  Entertainment at the Fishing Derby features puppeteer Chris Gromm.

Take a Magic Carpet Ride promises not only to be an exciting journey into the world of reading, but also entertaining and fun for all participants. The program takes place at the University Park Library on Saturdays at 2 p.m. as follows:

June 13: Pipdillys – songs, magic and juggling

June 20: Tom McDermott – storyteller/musician

June 27: Lizza Connor – children’s musician

July 11: Catherine Whiteman – storyteller

July 18: Solina Marquis – bilingual storyteller

July 25: Bubble Lady – bubbles and fun

While the program promises to engage kids with reading, it will also reward those participants who fly through pages. Rewards include:

  • A button to decorate each five hours or five books
  • Yard sign for each child who reads 10 hours or 10 books
  • A coupon for a cookie at JDs Chippery for each child who reads 20 hours or 20 books
  • A book for each child who reads 25 hours
  • A color-changing cup for each child who reads 35 hours

At the conclusion of the program, the Readers’ Cup trophy will be awarded to the HPISD school with the most collective hours read. Hyer Elementary is the current champion.
